1855 Schoolcraft Mississippi River Expedition Native American INDIAN Tribes RARE Henry Rowe Schoolcraft was an early American ethnologist and expert on Native American culture. He was well-known for his Congress-commissioned study on United States Indian tribes beginning in 1851. However, prior to his studies on Native American tribes, Schoolcraft set out on an expedition to discover the source of the Mississippi River through Detroit and find the boundary between the United States and Canada. In 1821, the year following the expedition, Schoolcraft published a record of his excursion under the title Narrative Journal of Travels Through the Northwestern Regions . This 1855 edition of that work was published under the title Summary Narrative of an Exploratory Expedition to the Sources of the Mississippi River . Field says of this work: The author has interwoven with his narrative a large number of incidents of Indian history, personal experience among the tribes he visited, and sketches of their principal characteristics, derived from persons living among them.
