Item description from seller

A smartly bound first translated edition of this collection of documents and letters relating to the development of the Suez Canal. First translated edition. A collection of official letters and documents relating to the development of the Suez Canal, an artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt, which in 1869 joined the Mediterranean and Red Seas, substantially reducing sailing distances and times between Europe and East Asia. Written by Ferdinand Marie, Comte de Lesseps, a French Orientalist diplomat and developer of the Suez Canal. Translated by Nancy Regina Emily Meugens Bell, a British translator and author of partial Belgian descent who used the pseudonym Nancy D'Anvers or N. D'Anvers (Nancy of Antwerp) until her marriage, after which she wrote as Mrs Arthur Bell. Bound in faux leather. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities and minor fading to the spine. Library label to the tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot and minor age toning to the endpapers. Library ink stamps to the title page and numerous other pages through the text. Library bookplates and the remnants of bookplates to the front pastedown. Very Good.…
