Title: The Subaltern Author: George Robert Gleig (G. R. Gleig) Publisher: J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd., London; E. P. Dutton & Co., New York Series: Everyman's Library, No. 708 – Fiction Publication Date: Undated reprint; first published in this series in 1915 Introduction: Editor's note Binding: Hardcover with original illustrated dust jacket Condition: Very Good book in Good dust jacket Description An attractive vintage Everyman's Library edition of The Subaltern by George Robert Gleig, published by J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd. as No. 708 in the celebrated Everyman's Library series. First published in 1825, The Subaltern is a compelling account of military life during the Peninsular War, drawing upon Gleig's experiences as a young British officer serving under Wellington. Written in an engaging first-person style, the work combines adventure, military observation and vivid descriptions of campaigning in Portugal and Spain during the Napoleonic Wars. Gleig's narrative offers valuable contemporary insights into the lives of ordinary soldiers and junior officers, exploring the hardships of military service, the excitement and confusion of battle, and the everyday realities of life on campaign. The volume retains its attractive original red Everyman's Library dust jacket, featuring the distinctive black-and-cream decorative design, printed title labels and series number. An appealing edition for collectors of Napoleonic military history, Peninsular War literature, nineteenth-century British writing and the Everyman's Library series. Condition Very Good hardcover in Good original dust jacket. The book is well preserved internally, with clean, clearly printed pages and light age-related toning. The photographed preliminary leaves and editor's note are particularly presentable. The original red dust jacket retains its strong colour, decorative design and clearly legible printed title panels. There is noticeable rubbing and edge wear, including small chips, short tears and some paper loss around the upper and lower extremities. The rear panel shows further minor scuffing and surface marks. The jacket remains attractive overall and retains its distinctive period appearance. Please refer to the accompanying photographs, which form part of the condition description. Bibliographical Details Everyman's Library No. 708, edited by Ernest Rhys. First published in this series in 1915. The photographed preliminary pages do not establish the printing date of this particular copy.…
