About this Item
First Edition ( 'Scribner A-10.69'). Very rare dust jacketed first edition. And in really excellent shape. The covers are exceptionally clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. The edges and corners are not worn at all. There's a teeny tiny crease at the top right-hand corner of the front cover. The only real cover wear are the creases at the top and bottom edges of the spine, including a it of fraying on the front side of the spine at the top edge. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover. Handling 527 pages without a binding glitch gives you a pretty good idea of how well produced the book is. And the previous owner was possibly very intimidated by the length of the book or was extremely conscientious, because the condition of the pages is terrific. I've scrolled through several times without finding even one instance of soiling. That includes the white inside covers and end papers. And the pages are quite bright. I'm not seeing any toning even though the paper has a slightly glossy feel to it. It's obviously very high quality paper. Anytime you say 'glossy' you should make sure to reassure that there is no foxing at all in the book and that is certainly the case here. Nor are there any markings or attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The only imperfection I see is really a minor. There is a vague semi-crease off the top corner of 30-40 consecutive pages. Not the sort of crease that is created by folding down a corner or by the paper being squinched. Maybe something just pressed a bit against that area, not sure. But we really are talking minor, minor enough that I could have guiltlessly omitted mentioning it. So, there are no turned down corner creases, no placeholder creases and no dogeared corners. A really terrific looking book befitting the fine writing within. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It's in pretty nice shape. It's very clean. I've had it in a fitted protective cover for as long as I've owned the book. That's a positive. There is a small scuff at the top right-hand corner of the front, one other even smaller one off the same top edge. There is also a tiny tear off the bottom edge of the front, a speck-sized loss off the top edge of the spine, two tiny tears/scuffs at the bottom edge of the spine, and not much to complain about on the rear cover. Of course I could've just said look at the pictures, but that would have been way too sane. The flaps are in very good condition, just some light age toning off the top edges. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. This book is quite deceptively heavy, by which I mean it weighs more than you would expect by looking at. However, it consists of selections from a very impressive list of writers so it probably has a fair amount of cerebral weight as well. These are the names of just some of the authors whose essays are included. The British authors: Robert Graves, Bertrand Russell, George Orwell, C. S. Lewis, Ford Madox Ford, W. Somerset Maugham, Virginia Woolf, D. H. Lawrence, T. S. Eliot, Oscar Wilde, John Ruskin, Matthew Arnold, William Wordsworth, David Hume, Jonathan Swift, John Locke, John Milton, Samuel Butler, and George Bernard Shaw. And a number of the American authors: Tom Wolfe, Alfred Kazin, E. B. White, Jack Kerouac, Mary McCarthy, William Faulkner, Lionel Trilling, Henry Miller, Henry L. Mencken, Thomas Wolfe, Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, Sherwood Anderson, Henry James, Mark Twain, Walt Whitman, Edgar Allan Poe, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Benjamin Franklin. Not too shabby. 'Professor Milic presents a method for analyzing prose style and selections of American and English prose (on the subject of style) for analysis. On the premise that the metaphorical terms in which style is usually discussed are vague to the point that the word has become almost meaningless, the author shows that style is distinct from content or language.'.
