About this Item
First Edition, First Printing, First binding, with FO monogram on bottom of spine. 433pp. Previous owner's name in his hand on Title page: "William Rumsey, Bath, NY, [Apl?]1871 Washington D.C." Rumsey was the son of David Rumsey, a US Representative and Supreme Court Justice for the State of New York. William fought in the Civil War, serving almost the entirety of the war as an Adjutant-General in a recruiting office in Elmira, as an Adjutant with the New York Light Artillery (with which unit he was wounded), as an aide to General Averell (with the rank of Colonel) and in another position in West Virginia. Rumsey would go on to a career as a lawyer and judge, rising to the Appellate Court in the State of New York. Maroon cloth boards with gilt titles faded on spine. Corners bumped and frayed. General bumping and rubbing to boards and spine. Spine frayed at top and bottom. 1" stain on bottom edge. Two small stains on fore edge, not visible on closed book, but they touch a few pages. Hinge cracked at front and at p. 167. Spine straight, with some play. Text free of marks. Slight warping to pages, not visible when book is closed. Small 1/2" bookseller sticker on front pastedown from Washington DC, presumably where Judge Rumsey purchased the volume. Seller Inventory # 000165
