Item description from seller

A multidisciplinary examination of structure as a unifying concept in visual art, architecture, design, mathematics, and the natural sciences, edited and introduced by artist, designer, and influential visual theorist Gyorgy Kepes. Part of Braziller’s Vision + Value series, the volume brings together an unusually distinguished group of artists, architects, scientists, and theorists. Contributors include R. Buckminster Fuller, Jacob Bronowski, Pier Luigi Nervi, Alison and Peter Smithson, Fumihiko Maki, Masato Ohtaka, Max Bill, I. A. Richards, Eduard F. Sekler, Cyril Stanley Smith, Richard Lippold, H. L. C. Jaffé, Richard Held, Margit Staber, and Lancelot L. Whyte. Subjects range from atomism and the natural philosophy of form to architecture, tectonics, collective form, communication, visual art, and structural painting. An appealing crossover work for collections devoted to modernism, architecture, design theory, systems thinking, visual culture, and the relationship between art and science. Condition: Good ex-library hardcover without dust jacket. Original light natural cloth is substantially soiled and toned, with scattered staining, rubbing, handling marks, and wear at corners and spine ends. Library call numbers and markings appear on the spine. Kansas City Public Library markings are present, including labels and remnants of removed labels on the endpapers, a library card pocket on the rear pastedown, and library stamps/notations. Black endpapers show adhesive and label residue. Binding remains intact. Interior pages shown are generally clean and presentable. No dust jacket. An academically useful and complete-looking copy, but decidedly a working ex-library example rather than a collector-grade copy. Please see photographs for condition details. Significance / Collector Appeal: Kepes was a central figure in twentieth-century visual theory and founded the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at MIT. Structure in Art and in Science is particularly notable for the breadth of its contributors and for its attempt to bridge modern art, architecture, science, mathematics, and theories of form. Contributions by Buckminster Fuller, the Smithsons, Nervi, Maki, Max Bill, and Bronowski give the volume continuing relevance to collectors and scholars of postwar architecture and design. Shipping / Returns: Carefully packed for shipment. Domestic shipping via USPS Media Mail unless otherwise requested. Expedited and international shipping available where permitted. Returns accepted in accordance with AbeBooks policies. SCI 3b.…
