At 32 years of age Arthur Conan Doyle began writing a series of short adventures of the now-famed Baker Street sleuth, Sherlock Holmes, for the illustrated monthly magazine, The Strand. It was Doyle's contributions to The Strand that propelled and cemented both his and the magazines fame. His first Holmsian contribution appeared in the second volume of the Strand. However, just a few months before, a then-little-known Doyle submitted a lesser-known short story entitled "The Voice of Silence". Within the pages of the Strand, the story was published anonymously with his authorial attribution only appearing in the rear index. "The Voice of Silence" is valuable for its exploration of the tensions between science and belief, its philosophical depth, and its reflection of the intellectual climate of Doyle's era and exhibits Doyle's versatility as an author. Lightly toned, extremities rubbed, hinges just starting, but holding strong, light and sparse foxing, overall a near fine copy of the first volume of this influential magazine. Publisher's teal cloth stamped in black, lacking the scarce publisher's dust jacket. Seller Inventory # 229612
