A very good copy in a full leather binding, of the first hardback edition of this beautifully illustrated scientific history of planet earth. No Dust Jacket (as issued?): Cover: tan leather covered boards with 5 raised bands and gilt decoration and lettering in a black cartouche to spine; gilt decoration to all edges; may have been bound for the Edinburgh Morayshire Club as their insignia is in gilt on front; very bright and clean; few signs of shelf wear apart from slight rubbing to some edges and corners, commensurate with age and use, some slight darkening to spine but overall in remarkable condition for its age. Internally: very clean and tightly bound; presentation plate from the club to the "Dux of Rothes School' (dated 1893-4) to front paste down; no other markings, inscriptions or book plates; all page edges gilt (very bright); Paste downs and end papers beautifully marbled, front end paper has 1" tear to edge but no loss; rear end paper torn off with 75% loss (see pictures); otherwise in excellent condition. Colour Frontispiece (tissue protected), further illustrated with 170 illustrations and maps throughout in black and white, and 2 colour maps and 3 further colour plates. xvi, 592 pp. Seller Inventory # 003298
