Rostislav Dubinsky, founder and first violinist of the Borodin Quartet for over 20 years. Stormy Applause: Making Music in a Worker's State is a 1989 memoir by Rostislav Dubinsky, the first violinist of the Borodin String Quartet, detailing his life as a musician in the Soviet Union, focusing on the political and anti-Semitic pressures, bureaucratic absurdities, and the lives of famous composers like Shostakovich, all told with wit and dark humor. The book offers a unique look at the challenges of being an artist and a Jew under a totalitarian regime, from the constant surveillance during tours to the internal struggles of the quartet.
