Add to basketThe University of Michigan Press, Ann Arbor, 1979. First Edition(NAP). 301 pages. Written By Alan Clive, who received his doctorate at the University of Michigan. This book was apparently owned by an individual who was going to be reviewing it. Inside the book is a For Review card from The University of Michigan Press that states 'please send two clippings of your review when it appears'. Very Good/Very Good. Beginning with the book, it is very solidly bound and it is very clean, both the covers and the pages. No soiling. What are its flaws? A small crease at the top of the spine, a small bump at the top of the front cover, and (the only reason it isn't rated NF) an imprint of a paper clip at the top of the two front free end papers and, very barely, on the next few pages. Otherwise, the pages look great, flawless. The unclipped dust jacket is in very solid shape. It has no tears and no loss, however it has quite a bit of scuffing, although the surface is entirely smooth. You can see this clearly by looking at the photos. There's also a sticker shadow at the top of the front flap. The dust jacket will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. "State of War chronicles a society confronted by the supreme challenge of World War II. It is the story of Michigan, its people and institutions, caught up in global crisis. Out of a contradictory swirl of change and continuity, Michigan emerged in 1945 as a recognizably modern industrial commonwealth. This book explores the forces that shaped the present day state and the contemporary American nation, forces unleashed in the wartime era. State of War is a significant addition to the literature of Michigan and a contribution to the history of the 20th century United States." From Alexander Saxton of UCLA "State of War is one of those books that makes the reader wonder why somebody didn't do it long before. Doubtless there will be other state studies following this useful model, but not many will match its high level of scholarship.".
