Dust jacket spine shows faint, minor scuffs. Book is otherwise fine. Stanley Kubrick : Drama & Shadows – an essential visual chronicle of his early life as a photographer. This landmark collection, published by Phaidon Press in 2005, brings together approximately 240 pages of haunting black-and-white photographs taken by Kubrick for *Look* magazine between 1945 and 1950. Organized into four thematic chapters—*Metropolitan Life, Entertainment, Celebrities,* and *Human Behavior*—it showcases around 350 carefully selected images, many of which had never been published before. Edited by Rainer F. Crone, the book illuminates Kubrick’s early artistic vision, capturing everyday moments with dramatic composition and emotional depth that foreshadow his later cinematic mastery. A must-have for fans of photography and cinema alike.

Stanley Kubrick Drama and Shadows is the first publication of early photographs by renowned filmmaker Stanley Kubrick (1928–1999), taken between 1945 and 1950 ― many of them never before seen by the general public. Kubrick made these photographs while he was a staff photographer for the New York–based Look magazine, following his graduation from high school and before he made his first films
Aimed at a broad audience, Stanley Kubrick Drama and Shadows reveals the director’s early experimentations with image composition and his attraction to dramatic, often psychologically intense subjects and narratives that would both become elements of his recognizable style as a director
Divided into four thematic chapters ("Metropolitan Life," "Entertainment," "Celebrities," and "Human Behavior"), this book features a carefully selected group of approximately 350 photographs organized into approximately thirty photographic stories. An insightful introductory essay provides context and examines Kubrick’s photographs in relation to the history of photography

Factory Cameras (& Books)
At Factory Cameras (& Books), we believe photography is more than an image—it’s a way of seeing, a way of remembering, and a way of understanding. Our small, independent shop is rooted in the repair and restoration of classic film cameras, but always encompassed a deep appreciation for the printed image as well. That’s why we now offer a curated selection of photo books, art monographs, and visual culture titles, along with occasional literary and design works that align with our aesthetic and ethos.
We specialize in photo books—both contemporary and classic—with an emphasis on documentary photography, street photography, and mid-to-late 20th century works. You’ll also find books that explore the material and cultural history of photography, including rare and out-of-print titles.
Our background in film photography gives us a particular lens through which we view books. We value precision, craft, and care—whether it’s in a beautifully bound monograph or a well-worn paperback with a story to tell. Every item we list is described with honesty and detail, and shipped with the same level of attention we give to our cameras.
Condition Grading
We err on the side of understatement. If we say a book is “Very Good,” it’s probably better than that. Any flaws—however minor—will be noted. We don’t sell surprises.
Shipping & Packaging
We pack with collectors in mind. Books are carefully wrapped and reinforced so they arrive safely and beautifully. We’re based in Canada, and ship internationally with reasonable rates.
