Bitsy's father, who is a soldier, has lost a lot of money through investments gone sour. He's also about to leave on a possibly dangerous secret mission. Bitsy and her mother and little brother must give up their glamorous New York apartment, Bitsy's exclusive private girls' school, and their vacations in fashionable Sea Cliff, to go off and live frugally on a cousin's farm in Ohio for the indefinite future. Bitsy is all too glad to go, because she has just been humiliated at overhearing a young man's opinion of her ("wet behind the ears") over the walls of a changing room at the Sea Cliff swimming pool, and she longs to get away from the peers she somehow no longer fits in with. Despite a rough start, once the family is settled at the farm, she finds she loves it. Then the same sneering young man shows up at a local air force base and is suddenly smitten with her.
