About this Item
306p. 325p; 320p. 21 cm hardcover bindings. First edition three-decker novel with original publisher's boards. Bindings show wear with scotch tape used at one point to reinforce the spine. Part of spine covering missing on volume 2. Boards show wear with bumped and split corners. Pages clean with some browning to edges. Sir Walter Scott is arguably the first historical novelist. This novel was published as a three-decker and likely for a circulation library in which paying members would rent it one volume at a time. While this edition shows considerable wear, it is an important and representative example of how fiction was circulated and experienced in nineteenth-century Britain. Seller Inventory # 118232
