Item description from seller

vi, [10], 542pp. With an engraved frontispiece and a further 15 engraved plates. Contemporary gilt-ruled half-calf, marbled boards, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Heavily rubbed. Scattered spotting, terminal leaf of text, terminal plate, and rear endpapers damp-stained at head. The first edition of sporting journalist Pierce Egan's (1772-1849) sketches of notable incidents in the pastimes of hunting, fishing, racing, and field sports. Baldwin's London Magazine (August and September 1820), in reviewing the a later edition, remarked, rather verbosely: 'The author her has contrived to mass together all the particulars of Horse, Dog, and Man, worth of being known. It is a happy composition; full of whim and particular phrases, with a slip of morality in it, like a bit of lemon-peel in one's punch, and delightfully flavoured with the choicest lime juice of slang. Every leaf of the book glitters like a river in the sun'. Size: 8vo.

Store description

Established 2007, Antiquates Ltd is an Antiquarian bookseller with a large, custom built shop in the heart of the Dorset countryside. We sell fine and rare books from our Wareham shop, in catalogues, and via our website (www.antiquates.co.uk). Specialising in early printed books both English and Continental, fine English Literature, and books by, for, and about Women and Children, we nevertheless stock a wide range of works on paper from 1500-present - including modern first editions. Our bias is towards the unusual, the interesting and the important - and always have a good stock of rare books by local authors such as T.E. Lawrence and Thomas Hardy; we are just the place if you're looking for an extra-special gift for a wedding, birthday, anniversary or graduation. (Open Wednesday - Saturday, 10am-4pm)…
