From the Back Cover
Well-groomed and wealthy, Mrs Tyler is not at all the sort of person Rita expected to find sharing her cell – but then Rita never dreamed she'd end up in jail herself. Mrs Tyler divulges that she is a compulsive shoplifter; Rita confesses to drunken driving and cocaine possession – a rebellious night out with her workmates went horribly wrong...
At first the two women appear to have little in common – a classy kleptomaniac in her fifties and a feisty twenty-seven-year-old, neither exactly delighted at their forced proximity. But, as the long hours that make up their three-day sentence start to tick by, they begin, in spite of themselves, to tell each other of their lives – their childhoods, their hopes and dreams, hardships and heartaches, joys and passions. Gradually, an intense if unlikely bond develops between them, teetering precariously between love and hate.
'It's a rare writer who can treat big subjects without falling into sentimentality, oversimplification, or showy theatrics, but Rossi is such a one'
LOS ANGELES TIMES
'Agnes Rossi is a richly gifted writer, a dazzling ventriloquist, so adept that she convinces you that her characters are real, that they have come to life, grabbed you by the lapels and begun to confess their lives.'
