Add to basketStated First Edition. Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy for sale anywhere on the Internet. The first edition is also quite rare. I saw only one other first, unsigned, and that was selling for $150.00. The red covers are clean. They have some rubbing, and all four corners have spots of rub-through. The front middle edge has a teeny tiny spot of rub-through and there is another small spot on the rear bottom edge just adjacent to the spine's bottom edge. In the 2nd photo you can see the spine. The black lettering is bright. There is a small bit of rub-through/loss at each of the spine ends. The page edges are toned but free of conspicuous soiling. The spine has a definite forward lean, but the book is solidly bound. I found one instance where there was a small space between two facing pages (just over the bottom half of the juncture), both of these pages were tightly bound from top to bottom. The covers are tightly bound. The front inside cover and facing end paper form a 'Map Of Setauket On Long Island.' The rear inside cover and rear end paper form a 'Map Of Fairfield In Connecticut.' The author and her family lived in Fairfield, Connecticut at the time of the writing of this book. That's likely where I purchased it some years ago. The author's husband, James Haynes, created the maps. Off the top edge of the mapped front end paper there is a small penned last name (Whitney). To the right of that there is a fairly small tan spot and there's another small one down a ways. There's a very small tear in the paper just off the bottom edge of the mapped inside cover, not really reaching into any of the map. The signed inscription is on the half-title page. It is dated February 11, 1975 and reads 'To Jill, Elaine, and Marcia with warm wishes. Happy Reading! Betsy Haynes.' The name Whitney and the signed inscription represent the only writing to be found in the book. The pages are clearly toned. They're also quite clean. Scrolling through, I only saw a few small tan spots in total, none on the print. There is a little crinkle just off the bottom edge of some of the early pages, nothing much of anything. There's a nick at the bottom edge of three consecutive pages. I found three pages that had a tiny crease at their bottom corner. There are no placeholder creases. Nor are there any markings or attachments in the book. The dust jacket clearly has some wear. Perhaps it's not surprising given the genre and the fact that it was inscribed to three children. You can see it in the first few photos. It has the losses at the spine ends and the front corners. The loss at the spine's top edge extends just a bit onto the rear cover. There is a fairly long tear coming up off the front bottom edge just adjacent to the middle edge. You can see the outline of it in the first photo. The protective cover does a good job at keeping it from standing out. There's also a small loss at the front middle edge. There are some edge tears on the rear of the dust jacket. Still, that there is a dust jacket on this book is an accomplishment. I think the only other book with one is the $150.00 copy. The flaps are in pretty good shape. There is one thin tear off the rear one just adjacent to the middle edge. The flaps are toned, but clean. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. I've always had it in a fitted protective cover. 'In this fast-paced adventure story, which has the burning of Fairfield (CT) as its climax, Jonathan is free and fourteen, with a man's courage. He had joined the Patriot's army to fight, not just to be an errand boy for a ship's captain. But as he waits in disgust for the boat to arrive at midnight, he suddenly sees a dead man lying in the water. And from the shadows springs another man, who knocks Jonathan unconscious. Too late, Jonathan realizes he's in a deadly business-- with unknown spies on the Devil's Belt!' The dedication: 'For my son Craig who wanted this to be a story about lizards.'.
