'Souls...', my first novel, took fourteen months to write itself in its first incarnation and several more ran their course before the final version got to rear its head. It's been termed 'new age horror', a badge about which I'd wondered at length until I was able to stand back and see everything.
Set in a quiet, dusty New Mexican town some years ago, the story involves much mythology and relies heavily upon historical/quasi-historical input and nightmare sequences. Heavy stuff. I learned very early on how vital the former element was to put most of the bones on the skeleton of the story's putrefied carcass. The other part I found would contribute heavily to forging one of the most pained characters I've ever had to care for in a story.
It's a long, weaving tale about demonic possession, haunting and the indestructibility of anger. The ideas that first came to me were enough to scare virtually the whole story out of (or into?) me for use on the very first draft. Everything thereafter just seemed to grow right out of this unholy soil.
My characters were old friends from old nightmares of mine. Their world was to become the biggest nightmare that I'd have to endure working in. Looking back now, I still regard the villains - enraged, homicidal hundred-and-twenty-something-year-old army riders - as the most terrifying that anyone could put on the chasing end of a pursuit situation. There's just no way that you can even hope to plead with something whose eyes have shrivelled into hard jelly pinheads or who hates you to the core just for being alive. All you can do is run and hope you won't feel the flash of steel on your back or those cold, sandpapery, desiccated fingers curling around your throat.
'Souls...' operates on a particularly nasty character chemistry. If my people were chemicals, I believe there's a very good chance that they would detonate when interacting with one another. I discovered a great deal about human minds before and as I wrote, particularly about the psychology of people in crisis. The crisis in 'Souls...' becomes quite cancerous as the tale unwinds and the apocalyptic body count (though regrettable in a few cases) is essential, never gratuitous.
I had many surprises while working on 'Souls of the Southern Stars'. Most of them came from the ever-increasing feeling that every word written was flowing directly from my nightmare-scorched subconscious. Of the ones left over, I found that these would frequently spill over into the territory of being 'shocks'. Knowing what I know now about the shocks that came to me while writing 'Souls...' gives me an eerie kind of satisfaction.
Notice that I said 'satisfaction' there and not 'peace'........

Store description
Uncle Hugo's started in 1974 and Uncle Edgar's in 1980 in different store fronts. Both stores moved into a much larger location in 1984. Rioters burned that location to the ground on May 30, 2020, wiping out over $1 million in books. In August, 2022 we reopened a new brick-and-mortar store at 2716 E. 31st St., about 2 miles east of our old location.

If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.
Information regarding the right of withdrawal
Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to Uncle Hugo's SF/Uncle Edgar's Mystery, Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.A., +1 612-824-6347, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.

Shipping costs are based on books weighing 2.2 LB, or 1 KG. If your book order is heavy or oversized, we may contact you to let you know extra shipping is required.
