From the Author
Dear Reader: Once Toni Ferrier made her appearance in Coming Home, I knew I had to tell her story in a book of her own. Toni, a former fashion model who now works as a minimum-wage retail clerk struggling to make a life for herself and her fatherless son, can’t help but know she’s a beautiful woman--on the outside. But on the inside, in her own mind, she’s an ugly, pathetic creature who’s made horrible mistakes for which she cannot forgive herself. How can she, when the consequences of her selfish choices affect nearly every aspect of her present life? When Toni meets her employer’s "adopted" son Clark McConaughey, she’s intrigued, attracted--and scared to death, especially when she realizes he’s also attracted to her. A good, decent man like Clark would never be able to love her if he knew the whole awful truth about her past. . . I wrote Snow Swan because I believe passionately in the grace and forgiveness of a loving God, and because I believe until we learn to forgive ourselves we do not easily forgive those who’ve wronged us. I put a great deal of energy into the research and writing of this book, including participation in an Al-Anon group to better understand addictive behaviors and tendencies--none of which I had, of course. Then I got honest with myself. I came away with wonderful lessons for my own life. One letter I received from a reader the day before Christmas 1998 made all my hard work even more worthwhile. My correspondent had been given the book by a friend who knew nothing of her past except that she was ashamed of it. He saw her inability to trust, her low self-esteem, and her pattern of pushing love away, and he knew she needed a new perspective on herself in the same way Clark comes to understand in Snow Swan that Toni needs a new, God’s-eye view of her worth and lovableness. "In many ways," my correspondent wrote, "I am so similar to Toni that it scares me. She asked what I’ve asked and felt what I’ve felt. . . [After I read Snow Swan] I asked myself how I could ever heal if I couldn’t love myself enough to ask God to forgive me? How could I ask God to forgive me if I couldn’t forgive myself?" With those questions, my new friend is moving toward healing. Her letter is the reason I write.
Warmly, Barbara Jean Hicks
