Choice Examples of the Five Orders of Architecture, Selected from the Most Celebrated Specimens of Antiquity, with the Figured Dimensions of their Height, Projections and Profile, and their Division into Parts. To which is Added a Number of Useful Geometrical Problems, Examples of Groins, Centering for Arches, Diagrams of Stair Lines, with Architraves, Door Moldings, ETC. Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott, 1866. 148pp. Frontis., plus Sixty-five plates, some folding and colored. Orig. cloth decorated in blind and in gilt. Binding a bit rubbed, spine rubbed, internally very clean, a very good copy. Hitchcock 1198. Sloan was the most prolific and influential American architect of the period. This is a notable American color plate book, important for documenting current American developments in the field of carpentry and building construction. This book reflects how American builders established their own standards, and in doing so rendered contemporary European practices obsolete. The text provides interesting comments regarding the history of architectural styles and motifs.
