Description:

First edition, printer s imprint in corrected state. [i-iii], iv-vii, [viii- x,] [1]-128 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. George Borrow (1803-1881), author and sometime literary drudge, was fascinated by peoples at the margin of received British culture, and is especially remembered especially for his books on the Gyspies. He and his family moved to Great Yarmouth in 1853. "The Yarmouth years were punctuated by walking tours in which he covered many hundreds of miles in Norfolk, Cornwall, Wales, the Isle of Man, Scotland, and Ireland. From one of them Wild Wales emerged (1862) a classic on Wales and the Welsh, seen through the eyes of a very unusual Englishman. At the same time he completed Celtic Bards, Chiefs and Kings, published in 1928, long after his death. He also published a translation of Ellis Wynne's The Sleeping Bard in 1860 just before he moved to London, where he did little writing apart from working at translations and the like" (ODNB). This masterpiece of Welsh prose, an prose allegory in three sections based upon adaptations of Quevedo's Los sueños, was originally published, London, 1703, under the title Gweledigaethau y bardd cwsg. Uncommon translation from the Welsh by Borrow, produced during the peak of his interest in Wales, and with excellent provenance, from the library of bibliophile and Grolier Club member Dean Sage, author of The Ristigouch and Its Salmon Fishing (1888). Period rebound in brown half calf over marbled boards; five raised bands with extra leather titles, tooled gilt decoration, matching marbled end papers, t.e.g. 12mo (19.1x11.9cm). pp. [iv] blank, vii, [3] half title and blanks, 128, [4] blank. Very Good. Edgewear with corners and joints rubbed, head chipped, darkened spine with extra leather spine title missing (with clear stamping visible); internally near fine with overall page toning to some pages as two papers were used. Collie & Fraser B.6a, without extra leaf [ix-x] tipped in and no note of copies printed. From the library of Micajah Pratt Clough (1848-1933) with bookplate (Brainerd 66, 1896: 1.75 by 3.25-inches) designed by Edwin Davis French (1851-1906) affixed to front pastedown. [Clough was a shoe manufacturer on Broad Street in Lynn Massachusetts and member of the Lynn Historical Society. This was one of the two bookplates commissioned from French, the other was Brainerd 51 the year before]. As indicated in the London Quarterly Review article of January 1861 and in the preface, Borrow believed parts of the work were more than 'inspired by' Francisco Quevedo's 'Visions or Discourses' [Los Sueos or Sueos y discursos ("Dreams and Discourses"), 1627]. Wynne's classic in Welch literature is an allegory of a city is divided into three "magnificent" streets: Pride, Pleasure and Lucre.with a little cross street in the distance representing true religion. Borrow actually completed the translation in 1830, but a certain Welch bookseller residing in Smithfield shrank from publishing it the night before press fearing ruin and prosecution from Sir James Scarlett [1st Baron Abinger 1769-1844].
