Paperback trade, very good condition, pages toned as usual, minor edgewear. 240 pp. Bosnians had great expectations of the post-Communist era in Eastern Europe. They already had a consumer culture, fuelled by tourism. But when the Yugoslavian state collapsed, Bosnia fell with it. In 1991 the world stood by, for the third time in 20th-century Europe, as a small minority - the Muslims of Bosnia - suffered genocide at the hands of Bosnian Serbs and the Serbian leadership. David Rieff went to Sarajevo and nearby villages, and bravely reported the disturbing and abject failure of the West and the United Nations to stop the war. Original Vintage paperback edition.

Review
The Advocate Rieff writes with a knowledge so thorough, an intelligence so keen, a passion so scalding, and a morality so vigorous, that one cannot come away from reading this without despair for mankind.
Anthony Lewis The New Republic An epitaph for Bosnia, or for us. I do not think anyone should be able to read this book without pain and anger.
