First printing. Octavo (19.5cm). Publisher's gray cloth with titles in gilt; floral endpapers; x,464pp. Covers slightly grubby, with mild rubbing to spine ends and board corners; spine and cover gilt dulled; text clean and bright. Early pencil ownership signature ("Holloway") to front flyleaf. A sound, Good or better copy. Quintessential reform-era labor novel, set mainly among workers in a barrel factory but also featuring, as a running sub-plot, the career of a fourteen-year old orphan girl who is sold into indentured servitude. She eventually escapes and is able to find slightly less punishing work in the sweatshops of Chicago, only to be seduced and impregnated by the company's junior partner, a professional predator. Foran (1844-1921) was a labor leader (President of the Coopers' International Union) turned progressive politician, serving as a U.S. Congressman from Ohio from 1882-1889. Uncommon. WRIGHT III:1953.
