Printed in 1693 by S. Roycroft for Rob. Clavell, this early English edition of A Short History of Monastical Orders appeared under the name Gabriel d Emillianne, used by Anthony Gavin. The book discusses the religious orders of Catholic Europe, including Dominicans, Franciscans, Capuchins, Jesuits, Benedictines, and various female orders. It also includes commentary on military-religious groups such as the Knights of Rhodes, Malta, Templars, and Teutonic Knights. Gavin, a Protestant convert, was known for critical writings about Catholic institutions. This edition is bound in modern leather over marbled boards, with gilt title and date to the spine. The format is duodecimo, measuring 7 x 4.5 inches. The book collates [40], 310 pages, though the final leaf is missing. Condition: Very Good. Structurally sound with tight binding and light wear.
