Sexual Dysfunction: A Guide for Assessment and Treatment

A comprehensive guide for therapists who wish to utilise the latest procedures for treating sexual dysfunctions. Clinician's will benefit from the authors' long years of clinical experience with a variety of sexual dysfunctions, and will also become conversant with the latest procedures from both medicine and psychology in use today. Awareness of the effects of new approaches will prove valuable to those confronting sexual problems. As the authors point out, clinicians with relatively little experience can utilise these programs to treat the majority of sexual dysfunctions with which they are confronted and be confident that their approaches are based on the latest developments in our science. A valuable resource for sex therapists, both experienced and beginners, psychotherapists, family therapists and counsellors.

"The second edition of this well-balanced guide is a much-needed addition to the literature. Wincze and Carey are distinguished clinical investigators in the fields of behavioral medicine and human sexuality. Their book gives equal consideration to biological and psychological causes of sexual disorders and, more importantly, offers guidance on integrating both approaches in treatment. The text is clinically relevant and grounded in basic research findings. It deserves a place on every clinician's shelf, and should be required reading for students in clinical training programs."--Robert Taylor Segraves, MD., PhD., Professor of Psychiatry, Case Western Reserve University, Editor in Chief of Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy "This welcome second edition delivers exactly what it promises--a clear, inclusive guide to the assessment and treatment of sexual dysfunctions in men and women. The book is data-based wherever possible, but acknowledges areas where limited data exist. It is eminently practical, including sample questions and questionnaires and examples of interviews with individuals and couples. This is a valuable resource for clinicians new to sexual dysfunction treatment issues, as well as those seeking the most current information about treatment options and directions."--Julia R. Heiman, PhD, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences; Reproductive and Sexual Medicine Clinic; University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle PRAISE FOR THE PREVIOUS EDITION "With its strength in the topics of assessment and diagnosis, it does have a place on a more comprehensive reading list."--Journal of Psychology and Human Sexuality "Sexual Dysfunction" is an excellent text to use in a graduate-level Human Sexuality counseling/psychotherapy course. It is clear and concise, with techniques that can be directly applied to a variety of clients. Students from many different types of direct service setting reported that they found the book easy to read, insightful, and informative."--Francesca G. Giordano, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Counseling Faculty, Department of Educational Psychology, Counseling, and Special Education, Northern Illinois University "This volume is part of a highly regarded series of treatment manuals for practitioners, edited by David H. Barlow, Ph.D.....The authors describe this as a book both for beginners who need a concise reference and for experienced professionals and for experienced professionals who need help in applying new ideas with their clients. Overall, the authors succeed admirably. The volume is a clear, precise, well-written overview of classic concepts integrated with the authors' own blend of empirically based research and clinical experience....However, these minor caveats aside, this volume on sexual dysfunction is one I highly recommend both for professionals who have had experience in treating sexual dysfunction and for beginners who need a concise, readable reference book that provides an up-to-date literature review as well as a heuristic biopsychosocial model of sexual dysfunction. I plan to assign this book to my trainees."--HOSPITAL AND COMMUNITY PSYCHIATRY "Their book is comprehensive and the material on the physiology of sexual dysfunction and the treatments is very helpful for those who are not medically oriented....This is a text that is chock-full of information....It is a good first source for the novice and an excellent support for those who teach sexual dysfunction to health professionals."--Contemporary Psychology "A very good training text for various health care professionals who want to include sex therapy cases in the client population. The authors accomplished their goals to provide a state-of-the-art overview of the most common sexual dysfunctions, and to present a step-by-step manual for the assessment and treatment of these problems....The book is an 'easy read, ' clearly organized, to be used as a quick reference or a basic treatment guide. I heartily recommend this book!"--Journal of Sex Education & Therapy The writing is exceptionally clear, the biopsychosocial model for assessing and treating the sexual dysfunctions is a valid one, and the book is scholarly yet readily accessible....It is a valuable practitioner's guide and will be well received by teachers of graduate students.''--Sandra R. Leiblum, Ph.D. "This is definitely a volume I would purchase and recommend to others. The book is a very scholarly, up-to-date, and highly readable overview of the field of sex therapy. To my knowledge, there is nothing quite like it on the market.''--Raymond C.
