About this Item
Rosa Symons' self-published account of her seven cycling trips around Great Britain, carried out between 1902 and 1907 four trips from London to John O'Groats to Land's End and to London, and three trips in reverse, with a best record (the final trip) of 14 days. Symons' opens her book with the chapter "Why I became a Vegetarian" and throughout her dietary advice can be found. Of the vi adverts to the rear, the last one is for Lectures on Health, Food, Exercise by Symons herself. Of the vi adverts to the front, the first is for private physical education classes with the "World's Lady Champion Cyclist" (Symons). Elsewhere can be found a map of Symons' route, alongside 2 plates plus a portrait frontispiece, and 4 woodblock designs. This particular copy is dedicated in ink from Symons to her nephew, the "Master Louis Rogers" for Christmas 1908, the same year the book was published. COPAC lists only one copy, in the British Library. An unknown quantity printed, but a very scarce publication concerning both early female cycling and vegetarianism. Paper covered, cloth backed boards. Binding perfectly sound, though a little separation between segments, which appear to have been glued directly to the single cloth strip of the spine; pastedowns; vi adverts to front; portrait frontispiece, title page, contents page; 59pp (numbered from 7 to 66); vi adverts to rear. Damage to front cover as pictured, otherwise, in total, a very well preserved copy. Seller Inventory # ABE-1722848131995
