About this Item
Apparent First Edition (SD, NAP). This is an 87-year-old book in excellent condition. But what makes it singularly unique is the presence of its 87-year-old dust jacket which is still somehow in very good condition. There is only one other copy for sale with the dust jacket and that one is, to put it unkindly, a wreck, held together by much tape. Take a look at the photographs of my book. The orange covers are in excellent condition. There's a little bit of handling soiling here and there, but it's quite light and not particularly conspicuous. There really isn't any wear to speak of. The book is square and tight and sturdy. The binding is very solid throughout. The interior of the book is in excellent condition. The pages are quite clean, with only very occasional specks of soiling. No one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. There aren't any creases. No dogeared corners. No markings or attachments. There are eight full-page color illustrations including the frontispiece. They are in wonderful condition. There are an additional seven full-page black-and-white illustrations. They are in wonderful condition. There are many other smaller black-and-white illustrations throughout. The dust jacket has been protected by a fitted cover for quite a long time. There are small clips at the four corners, likely just to keep things neat. The original price is present and unaffected. The flaps are in very good shape. You can see the dust jacket in the first three photographs. The front is in very nice shape, particularly given its age. There's a little bit of darkening at the margins. There's a 5/8th inch tear off the front top edge, a 3/8th inch crease off the front bottom edge. There is a tiny spot of loss at the front top right-hand corner and a 3/8th inch spot of loss at the front top edge adjacent to the spine affecting the 't' in Sergeant. The spine is darkened. There is also some darkening adjacent to the spine on the rear cover and at the top edge of the rear cover. But the rear cover is in very good condition. As I said the dust jacket is already fitted with a protective cover. This book was originally sent to a reviewer. An original 4 1/2 by 3" 'Book for Review' slip with Publication Date Sept. 20th and a request that ' a clipping of your review will be greatly appreciated' is included. The price of this book in apparent decent condition begins at about $40.00, which generally means that a copy in a very good dust jacket should go for about $130.00. I've priced it at $95.00. The author George Mitchell also illustrated his book. From the dust jacket flap 'In a tree on the edge of the jungle lived Sergeant Giggles and his friends, Lassitude, the jackass, and Gratitude, the dog. In these stories of the kind, jolly Sergeant and his animal friends, there is a humor and a charm that will catch every child's fancy. George Mitchell has illustrated his stories with unusually intriguing drawings of the fat little Sergeant, Enzo the Ephlant (his spelling), Violet the Hippopotamus, Jenny the Giraffe with the sore throat and all the other jungle beasts who came to the Sergeant for help and advice. The illustrations in color and black-and-white by the author are as gay and slyly humorous as the stories.'. Seller Inventory # 000999
