The story of a struggle for a young man's soul--the struggle between his unwilling attraction to a powerful and possive older man (whom the New York Times referred to as a "calculating homosexual") and his tender, idyllic love for a girl. The young man is an American GI at a postwar Army base in France; the older man is his sergeant who, out of his lonliness and need, tries to take possession of him; Solange is the young and attractive French girl with whom he falls in love.
