First Edition (1997) ; First Printing indicated by a complete numerical sequence. Very Good+: shows as touch of wear to the corner tips and head and heel of the backstrip; a tiny nick at the bottom edge of the front panel; a small area of very faint smudging to the upper fore-edge; the faintest crease to the backstrip; the binding is slightly cocked off square but remains perfectly secure; the text is clean. Free of creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of underlining, hi-lighting, notations, or marginalia. Free of any ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. A handsome copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing mild wear and the several minor imperfections noted above. Bright and clean. Close to "As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. Large 8vo (9.35 x 6.6 x 1.15 inches) . Language: English. Weight: 28.4 ounces. Hardcover: Laminate Boards. Semiclassical Physics emphasizes the close connection between the shorter classical periodic orbits, and the partially resolved quantum fluctuations in the level density and response of an autonomous finite quantum system. Particular care is taken to present a detailed derivation of Gutzwiller's trace formula, and its extensions to continuous symmetries, zeta function techniques, and diffractive orbits. Simple model examples are used to illustrate the formalism. The self-consistent mean-field approach to the many-body problem is used, and the extended Thomas-Fermi model posited for the average properties of finite fermion systems. Strutinsky's energy theorem is exploited to bring out the quantum effects in interacting systems. Experimental manifestations of quantum shell structure, and their understanding in terms of a few classical orbits, are illustrated in atomic nuclei, metal clusters, and mesoscopic devices. ; Frontiers in Physics; Vol. 96; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; xiv, 444 pages.…

About the Author
Matthias Brack was born in Basel, Switzerland, and studied IN Basel and at the Niels Bohr Institute (NBI) in Copenhagen. He spent his post-doctorate years at the NBI, Stony Brook (SUNY), and Grenoble (ILL), and is currently a professor of physics at the University of Regensburg, Germany. His main research efforts are directed toward unraveling the quantum behavior of many-fermion systems in nuclear, atomic and condensed matter physics by semiclassical methods. Rajat K. Bhaduri was born in Raipur, India. He is currently an emeritus professor of physics at McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada. He is the author, or co-author, of two other books, Models of the Nucleon and Structure of the nucleus. He is broadly interested in physics, including its semiclassical aspect.
