First Edition in book form of 'one of the great books of London,' collecting a series of architectural notes describing contemporary London First edition, 1816, in crimson morocco by Riviere, gilt edge tooling. Spine, raised bands, decorative gilt tooling & titles. Internally, frontis, [6] intro, [2] pl list, [1], 2-159 pp, 76 hand-colored aquatint or engraved plates (5 folding), plates clean and bright, a.e.g., gilt tooling to board edges & turn ins, binders stamp to fpd, marbled endpapers, upper joint repaired, with Japan paper repair to hinge. (253*176 mm). ( Tooley 361. Bobins 698. Abbey Scenery 217 - noting 2 issues, this being the slightly rarer issue with Papworth's name on the title page). The architect John Papworth, who adopted the middle name 'Buonarotti' around 1815, was a founding member of the Royal Institute of Architects. Most of the views of London included in this work were previously published in Ackerman's Repository of the Arts.
