About this Item
First Edition (NAP). Limited Edition: 'Of This Book There Have Been Printed, By D.B. Updike, The Merrrymount Press, Boston, Massachusetts, U. S. A., One Hundred And Fifty Copies For the Authors Distribution, December 2, 1935.' You can see the attractive covers in the photos. They are very clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is bright. There's a little bit of smooth rubbing on the spine, only light wear at the spine ends, including two very small spots of loss, although the material (layer) underneath is the same color. The six edges look good, the corners as well, two of them have speck-sized bits of rub-through. The middle page edge is deckled or rough-cut. The book is square. The spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover. The covers themselves are very solidly bound as well. The pages are in good shape. I'm not seeing any conspicuous creasing, no turned-down corners or placeholder creases. The deckled middle edge is mostly very good, but there are a half-dozen to a dozen instances where the edge is true to its name, rough-cut. The pages are, for the most part clean. There's a tan spot in the same place on both sides of four consecutive pages, at the top margin, away from the print. There are a few other random spots, nothing much. There is a light, mostly blending, impression of a water stain off the top edge of most of the pages. It just barely reaches the title of the book near the top of each page. It definitely doesn't jump out at you, but you can see the line of it. There are two etchings or drawings in the book. They are identified as Plates on an early page. One is titled The Victim In The Attic and the other is titled "Big Pa". Both are in very good condition and protected by tissue guards which are also in very good condition (one has some wrinkling). There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. I have a second book by Ms. Prescott listed for sale with identically designed covers. It is titled 'Tales Of A Sportsman's Wife: Fishing' and is also a Limited Edition of 150 copies. However, that book is also signed by the author, and is being offered at a price dramatically below the second least expensive copy for sale. The banker who fathered Ms. Prescott was A. H. Wiggin who once ran Chase National Bank. 'Under Wiggin, Chase entered a period of rapid growth, spurred by the acquisition of several New York financial institutions and the creation of a securities division that made his bank second only to National City Bank. In 1917, Wiggin was made Chairman of the bank and served on the board of directors of more than fifty major American corporations. He was responsible for bringing in members of the Rockefeller family as investors in Chase National Bank. By 1918, Wiggin made Chase the fourth largest bank in the United States.'.
