Second Printing of the Dred Scott Decision, Benjamin C. Howard, Washington 1857 Report of the Decision of the Supreme Court of the United States, and the Opinions of the Judges Thereof, in the Case of Dred Scott vs. John F. A. Sandford. December Term, 1856; By Benjamin C. Howard, From the Nineteenth Volume of Howard's Reports. Washington Cornelius Wendell, Printer 1857 The second printing of the historic and abhorrent Supreme Court decision that held that the Constitution did not extend American citizenship, and the rights enshrined within, to people of black African descent. Priority was formerly unestablished with the New York Appleton imprint but recent scholarship from Douglas W. Lind has identified that this is in fact the second printing, following the New York imprint which Wendell issued early to preempt the distribution of this present publication, which was not authorized by Congress until February 1858. Sewn wraps, pp. 239, [1]; Good condition, lacking front wrap, original rear wrap and most of spine still present, tail of rear wrap chipped, tear to bottom third of title joint, chipping to tail corner of title and following couple pages, small damp stain to tail corner of title extending through about 20 pages lightening as you progress, corners creased, minor stains/foxing to title and text [Howes S218; Lind, Douglas; Dred Scott v. Sanford: Opinions and Contemporary Commentary].…
