Hardcover.Front cover is about to detach from text block, otherwise a good reading copy. A note on the publishing history is needed before the description. The book was first published in 1894 under the title Search Lights on Health by J.L. Nichols and Company of Naperville, Illinois — the firm co-founded by one of its two authors — and went through an extraordinary number of editions and reprintings over the following decades, the title fluctuating between Search Lights on Health, Searchlights on Health, and Safe Counsel or Practical Eugenics across different printings. The edition most commonly encountered by booksellers is the 1920 or 1921 J.L. Nichols printing, which runs to 492 pages in octavo and is bound in dark blue cloth.Professor B.G. Jefferis, M.D., Ph.D., was the primary medical authority behind the text. J.L. Nichols, A.M., was his co-author and publisher — a combination that gave the book an unusually direct route to market and helps explain its sustained commercial life across thirty-plus editions. The epigraph on the title page of the 1920 edition reads: Vice has no friend like the prejudice which claims to be virtue — Lord Lytton, a quotation that fairly captures the book's self-positioning as a frank counter to Victorian prudery, even as it reproduces many of that era's deepest anxieties. The book is organized as a popular medical and moral handbook addressing the full range of subjects that the period gathered under the heading of social hygiene: physical development, personal purity, the dangers of masturbation and venereal disease, courtship, marriage, reproduction, pregnancy, child-rearing, menopause, and the principles of eugenics as then understood. The eugenics content — which in later editions expanded to include chapters on historical facts of racial improvement, methods of improving the race, the eugenic marriage licence, sterilization of the unfit, and birth control — reflects the mainstream Progressive Era consensus that heredity could and should be managed for social benefit, a position whose catastrophic later history the authors could not have anticipated and which makes those sections deeply uncomfortable reading today. The remainder of the book operates in a rather different register: practical, earnest, and genuinely aimed at providing accurate physiological and medical information to readers who had access to very little else. Advice on diet, exercise, hygiene, domestic sanitation, the management of pregnancy, the signs of venereal disease, and the avoidance of quack remedies fills the majority of the text, illustrated with anatomical and instructional black and white figures throughout. It is a primary document of early twentieth-century popular medicine, sexual education, and eugenic ideology, and is now most usefully approached as historical evidence of what a wide readership of ordinary North Americans was being told about their bodies, their marriages, and their obligations to the next generation in the first decades of the century.…
