Stephen Robertson (1933 - 2011) was born in Aberdeen, attended Aberdeen Grammar School and then studied law at Aberdeen University. Along with William "Buff" Hardie and George Donald, he created the popular Scottish comedy show, Scotland the What?, originally billed as ?three semi-literate Scots taking an irreverent look at their country?s institutions?. All three had been students at Aberdeen University in the 1950s where Hardie and Robertson excelled as writers and performers, while Donald contributed the musical elements to several student shows. The show which was to become a national treasure made its debut in September 1969, on the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Scotland the What? was an instant hit and returned to the Fringe in triumph the following year, with some added Northeast material. They subsequently performed the show at His Majesty's Theatre in Aberdeen.
