Synopsis

Scotland and the Lowland Tongue brings together a series of essays by a group of his friends for presentation to David Donald Murison, the scholar who has done more than any other to further the philological study of the Scots language. His scholarship and his lexicographic flair, his dedication and drive were evident in his work between 1946 and 1976 as editor of the Scottish National Dictionary. His immense erudition ranges, too, over a broad sweep of Scottish literature, history and topography as well as European and classical philology, as anyone will know who has been privileged to hear him lecture - at academic conferences or Burns Suppers. In these essays the use of Lowland Scots is studied in relation to different periods and genres of Scottish literature. Some form of vernacular Scots has existed as an optional or an essential component of much of the best of this literature throughout its history. Always more than one kind of Scots has been available to the writer, each kind carrying with it some implication of social, regional, intellectual or emotional character or style. In this book a number of scholars offer a sustained examination of that variety and of its rich expression. Their survey embraces the language of seven centuries, from that of Older Scots poetry to Lowland Scots in twentieth century drama and the Glasgow dialect in literary use today.
