Scientific Explanation and the Causal Structure of the World by Wesley C. Salmon. Published in 1984, this presumed first edition by Princeton University Press is in softcover format with brown and white glossy wraps. The covers are clean with minor shelf wear, including a creased lower corner on the front cover and light rubbing at the spine ends. The binding is square and tight, ensuring durability. The half-title page has a hand stamp that has been neatly marked out. There are sparse, lightly erased pencil markings on fewer than five pages; otherwise, the interior pages are clean and free of ink markings. In this seminal work, Wesley C. Salmon explores the nature of scientific explanation and the pivotal role of causality in understanding the world’s structure. His discussion focuses on how scientific explanations elucidate causal mechanisms, advancing the dialogue on the relationship between explanation, causation, and scientific inquiry. The book will be carefully packaged to ensure safe delivery. The philosophical theory of scientific explanation proposed here involves a radically new treatment of causality that accords with the pervasively statistical character of contemporary science. Wesley C. Salmon describes three fundamental conceptions of scientific explanation--the epistemic, modal, and ontic. He argues that the prevailing view (a version of the epistemic conception) is untenable and that the modal conception is scientifically out-dated. Significantly revising aspects of his earlier work, he defends a causal/mechanical theory that is a version of the ontic conception.
Professor Salmon's theory furnishes a robust argument for scientific realism akin to the argument that convinced twentieth-century physical scientists of the existence of atoms and molecules. To do justice to such notions as irreducibly statistical laws and statistical explanation, he offers a novel account of physical randomness. The transition from the "reviewed view" of scientific explanation (that explanations are arguments) to the causal/mechanical model requires fundamental rethinking of basic explanatory concepts.

Alien Bindings is an online bookshop located in Baltimore that has been in operation for nearly 20 years. Alien Bindings caters to the sciences including the physical sciences, astronomy, mathematics, computer science, the social sciences and medicine.
