Add to basketTHE SCIENCE RECORD FOR 1872 ALRED E. BEACH EDITOR 1ST GATLING GUN FEATURE ARTICLE. Please find on offer here a vintage copy of: The Science Record for 1872- A Compendium of Scientific Progress and Discovery during the Past Year . This small hard cover book (5 ¼ x 7 ¾ inches 400 pages plus 8 pages of publisher s adverts) was published by Munn and Company of New York dated 1872 and the First Edition with the same date on title and copyright pages. This publisher was the home of Scientific American magazine which was founded by inventor and publisher Rufus M. Porter in 1845 as a four-page weekly newspaper. Throughout its early years, much emphasis was placed on reports of what was going on at the U.S. Patent Office. Porter sold the publication to Alfred Ely Beach and Orson Desaix Munn a mere ten months after founding it. Until 1948, it remained owned by Munn & Company. This particular annual issue-edited by Alfred E. Beach and including illustrations-- featured two articles about the Gatling Gun and its founder-Richard Jordan Gatling. One article is a short biography of the Inventor and the other article recounts (pp. 112-151) the history and system of this firearm. There are also many other articles including: tunneling under the East River in New York and other tunnels-arctic navigation, separating gold and silver, some short biographies of well-known scientists (eg. Louis Agassiz), and the Brooklyn Bridge. Condition: This vintage book is in very good condition. There has been bumping and rubbing to the hard covers and the corners and spine tips are frayed. The hard covers are dust-dulled as well and lightly soiled and the gilt decorations and titles tarnished but still fully legible. A former owner has left his name and town on the first blank page but this and a few penciled scribblings and the title of an article about the British Patent Office-- are the only real marks I found. The pages are lightly toned but there is no foxing and only an occasional light spot of soiling. One of the sheaths of pages (pp. 218-238) is a bit loose but still holding. The rest of the binding is tight. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
