Item description from seller

First edition of this wide-ranging exploration of the philosophical implications of contemporary science, originally delivered during the Deems Lectures at New York University. This copy includes a loosely inserted prospectus, promotional letter, and business reply card from Macmillan. F. S. C. Northrop (1893-1992) primarily a legal philosopher, studied under Alfred North Whitehead at Harvard: in the enclosed prospectus, Whitehead is quoted as saying that "Science and First Principles states with freshness and independence, considerations which must never be forgotten". Octavo. Illustrations in the text. Original dark blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, fore edge untrimmed. With dust jacket. Infrequent contemporary pencil annotations to contents and ink signature of Paul A. Schilpp, presumably the American philosopher (1897-1993), to front free endpaper. Light bumping, contents crisp; slight toning, chipping, and creasing to unclipped jacket: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.
