Knapp [1888], First Edition - no date inside book, however research indicates a First Edition 1888 volume. This is a Minerva Series, wonderfully illustrated with black and white full plate etchings, including frontispiece of black and white etching of 'The Filey Boats Leaving Harbour'.
A wonderful story and historical account of Filey and Bridlington by the Rev. George Shaw (1830 - 1903), a Methodist Minister. This is one of a number of books written by George which also includes additional books on Filey and Grimsby.
George was born on 26 September 1830 at Grimsby, Lincolnshire to parents George and Jane. George senior was a tailor. Prior to entering the ministry George trained as a tailor.
George?s grandmother was one of the earliest members of the first Society at Grimsby, which was formed in 1819. George joined the Primitive Methodists in 1849 and soon became a local preacher.
George?s obituary records that the temperance cause found in him an earnest advocate, and progressive politics a stalwart friend.
His public ministry evinced wide and varied reading. In knowledge of the Scriptures, and ability to forcefully and intelligently expound them, especially the more obscure and difficult portions, he excelled. His great stories of pathos, humour and reminiscence contributed largely to his pulpit power. He held fast to the central and vital truths of the Gospel. Christ had inn every sermon ?the pre-eminence?.
In original green illustrated boards, age related wear with a darkened spine. Pastedown; 'New Glee Baptist Sunday School' stamp with a handwritten note in old ink for a prize for attendance, dated Dec 25th 1898. Also, a small green printers' sticker to lower left of pastedown. FEP split to lower edge of hinge (2") - page not loose. Small faded pencil mark to top right of FEP. Rear pastedown paper has cracked - does not impact the spine. Frontispiece of black and white etching of 'The Filey Boats Leaving Harbour'. Pages are age toned - but this does not impact the etchings or the text.
