Former library copy with discarded stamp, withdrawal markings, bookplate, and evidence of label removal to front pastedown. Dust jacket present and complete but heavily toned with edge wear, rubbing, and several small chips and closed tears, particularly at spine ends. Cloth shows mild shelf wear and a few faint stains. A solid reading and research copy.
This collection gathers selected essays by George Sarton (1884?1956), the pioneering historian widely regarded as the founder of the modern academic discipline of the history of science. Edited by Dorothy Stimson, the volume presents Sarton's reflections on the development of scientific thought, the transmission of knowledge across cultures, and the relationship between science and civilization. The essays demonstrate the breadth of Sarton's scholarship and his enduring influence on the study of intellectual and scientific history.
Published by Harvard University Press six years after Sarton's death, this volume serves as an accessible introduction to one of the twentieth century's most important historians of science. Of particular interest to scholars of intellectual history, the history of medicine, Renaissance studies, bibliography, and the development of scientific institutions. The inclusion of the original dust jacket enhances its appeal despite the library provenance.
