Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First UK Edition. A second impression of the first UK edition, published in June 1970, just a month after the first impression. By the author of "The Treasure of The Copper Scroll" and "The Dead Sea Scrolls". A nicely produced book with a sewn (not glued) binding. With a colour frontispiece showing 'Amanita muscaria' (Fly Agaric toadstool) and one further colour plate within, plus six figures within the text. ***Near fine in black buckram boards with gilt titles on the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked and the gilt is still beautifully bright. No bumps or creases. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges clean. Top edge of the page block stained orange by the publisher, slightly faded. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. No creases or tears. No foxing. Pages clean. With mushroom line-illustrated endpapers. ***In a very good dustwrapper, which is complete and has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's dual printed price of 63s / £3.15 net at the top of the front flap. As usual with this title, there is some rubbing at the edges, with some loss to the surface colour, mainly at the base of the spine. No serious creases, chips or tears. No serious fading except for the orange titles on the spine, and the orange band on the back panel near the spine, which have both faded to yellow. Dustwrapper otherwise bright and undamaged. ***240mm x 160mm. 349 pages plus an extensive section of Notes and Indices at the back of the book. ***Contents: Introduction, I. In the Beginning God Created ---, II. Sumer and the Beginnings of History, III. The Names of the Gods, IV. Plants and Drugs, V. Plant Names and the Mysteries of the Fungus, VI. The Bible as a Book of Morals, Notes, Indices. ***'"The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross: A Study of the Nature and Origins of Christianity Within the Fertility Cults of the Ancient Near East" is a 1970 book about the linguistics of early Christianity and fertility cults in the Ancient Near East. It was written by John Marco Allegro (1923-1988). The book relates the development of language to the development of myths, religions, and cultic practices in world cultures. Allegro argues, through etymology, that the roots of Christianity, and many other religions, lay in fertility cults, and that cult practices, such as ingesting visionary plants to perceive the mind of God, persisted into the early Christian era, and to some unspecified extent into the 13th century with re-occurrences in the 18th century and mid-20th century, as he interprets the fresco of the Plaincourault Chapel to be an accurate depiction of eucharistic ritual ingestion of Amanita muscaria. Allegro argued that Jesus never existed as a historical figure but was rather a mythological creation of early Christians under the influence of psychoactive mushroom extracts such as psilocybin.' (Wiki) ***Second impression of the first UK edition of this scarce cult work. The book was a surprising success, and went into three impressions in three months, but then went out of print until a 40th anniversary edition was published in 2009. All three impressions of the first edition are uncommon, especially in collectable condition, as the dustwrappers are very prone to curling, creasing and tearing. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 8750
