Item description from seller

First thus. Likely first illustrated publication of this 16th century Aztec text in US, possibly anywhere. Published December 31, 1940 by The Committee of Popular Publications of the American Museum of Natural History; no.251 of a limited printing of 600. 10" x 11 1/4", side-stapled with glued cloth binding over. 20 black & white photogravure reproductions of the codex's pages, preceded by a brief introduction by editor George Vaillant. Binding remains firm and fully intact; text and plates very good throughout. Light shelfwear, mild toning to edges of cardstock covers, gentle crease to bottom corner of front cover; dust/damp-spotting covering most of rear cover. From the collection of Alonzo (& Nancy) Houser, with their striking plate on front end page and Alonzo's small name inscription on front cover. Alonzo Houser was a highly prolific artist, sculptor and the founder of the art department at Macalester College (St. Paul), whose works of public art can be found throughout the Twin Cities. Nancy started Nancy Hauser Dance Company and School in Minneapolis, which focused on contemporary and modern works in the German Expressionist tradition from its inception in 1961 until its closing in 2011.
