CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Hannibal Johnson served in the Union Army when he enlisted as a private on June 4, 1861, in Augusta Maine until he was mustered out a 2nd Lt in Hallowell Maine in 1865. This personal narrative is most valuable for its captivity, escape and evasion narrative; much of value on the country and people he encountered. Johnson captured at the Battle of the Wilderness, reached friendly lines January 6, 1865. The 3rd Maine fought at First Bull Run and most of the subsequent major engagements of the Army of the Potomac until it mustered out in June 1864. The 3rd Maine in one of the Fox 300 Fighting Regiments. REFERENCES: DORN ME 46; COULTER 260: "Hannibal Johnson was captured in the Battle of the Wilderness in May 1864, and imprisoned at Macon, Charleston, and Columbia. The main part of the narrative relates to his escape from the Confederate prison at Columbia and his subsequent wanderings through South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee until he crossed the mountains to Knoxville and entered the Union lines. His journey as a fugitive like any others was assisted by slaves in the plantation regions and bushwacking mountaineers in the highlands. He seems to have kept some sort of a diary after leaving Charleston though there is evidence of much reworking." NEVINS I, p. 195: "This work includes brief reminiscences of Eastern Confederate prisons; most valuable part is a diary of escape over mountains". FOX REGIMENTAL LOSSES pg 126.…
