Item description from seller

Large 8vo. (24 cm.) [8]1-231[11]p. Illustrated with 28 black and white captioned photos, one black and white map, and one chart. Index. Black and white photo pictorial endpapers. Red cloth with gilt letters on the front cover and the spine. Just touches of wear to extremities, cloth clean and bright, gilt bright (!), all photos in fine condition, occasional asterisks in the margins with only one having an added comment, previous owner's name and address, else near fine to fine with no other internal markings. No dust jacket, perhaps as issued. "Fairbury, Illinois, is a village on the Corn Belt Highway, U.S. Route 24, sixty miles east of Peoria. Its coal mines, on either side of town and visible from the highway, are empty now, skeleton reminders of the nights when Fairbury was filled with their roistering men. This is the story of those times. It begins with a real estate operator's plan just before the Civil War, and it ends with the turn of that century. This little account of early Fairbury is in no way intended as a serious history. The tales it contains were gathered solely for pleasure, and are meant to show that, if parents are people, so were grandparents, and their fathers and mothers before them." [from the Foreword].…
