Hardback, 1st US edn. With the increase in prison riots at the time, more and more people were beginning to express concern over America's penal institutions. What conditions caused the inmates to rebel? What breeds acts of such desperation? What is life in prison really like? why have prisons failed? The author (serving a prison sentence when writing his book) answers these questions and more, from the point of view of a man directly affected by them. An insightful account of what imprisonment means to the convict; what kinds of personalities and upbringings make men break the law. As crime begins to affect an increasing number of Americans of all ages, people realise the need for prisons that will rehabilitate rather than embitter criminals or act as a school for crime. Includes a chapter on Sex in Prison and other references to homosexuality. A hard-biting narrative. 145pp. 12mo h/back. Nr. F. in Vg. dw.
