A very good copy in very good dust jacket. Pp. xii, 500. Autobiography of one of the most prominent, long-serving figures of the ALP Left faction. A major portion of the book focuses on his formative, harrowing experiences during World War II. Serving in the Australian Army, Uren was captured by Japanese forces and spent three and a half years as a prisoner of war, enduring brutal slave labor on the infamous Burma-Thailand Railway. He details how this period - particularly serving under the legendary surgeon Sir Edward "Weary" Dunlop -instilled in him a lifelong collectivist philosophy, a belief in peaceful coexistence, and a fierce opposition to militarism. The second half of the book details his 32-year career in Federal Parliament, representing the seat of Reid from 1958 to 1990. Uren pulls back the curtain on decades of internal ALP factional battles, spanning critical historical flashpoints from the Vietnam War and East Timor to the rise of economic rationalism.
