The Story of Tilford: From Prehistoric Times to 2000 (Tilford Parish Council, 2000) by Captain John E. Franklin is a locally published, illustrated village history that traces the development of Tilford—from its earliest human presence to the turn of the millennium. It is a first‑edition, parish‑commissioned local history, richly illustrated with photographs and maps, offering a chronological narrative of Tilford’s landscape, archaeology, families, buildings, and community life from prehistory to the year 2000. Franklin begins with archaeological evidence from the wider River Wey valley—Neolithic flints, Bronze Age barrows, and early settlement patterns—placing Tilford within a long continuum of human activity. Nearby finds such as Roman tiles from an ancient tile‑making site help anchor the village’s earliest documented presence. Medieval Foundations Tilford’s first textual appearance is in the Domesday Book (1086) as part of the Hundred of Farnham. The book describes how the medieval landscape was shaped by: the Cistercian Waverley Abbey (12th century), whose agricultural influence extended into Tilford, early farming communities, the establishment of the ford and the two medieval bridges that still define the village. Early Modern Tilford (16th–18th centuries) Franklin covers the emergence of substantial farmhouses (some dating to the 16th century) and the gradual growth of Tilford’s rural economy. Hop‑growing in the 17th–18th centuries likely contributed to population expansion and cottage building. The book also touches on notable estate owners such as Elizabeth Abney, whose detailed 18th‑century survey map survives in the British Library. Victorian and Edwardian Tilford The 19th century saw the consolidation of parish institutions: All Saints Church (1867), now Grade II listed, the development of schools and community buildings, the construction of Tilford House (1727) and later its chapel (1776), which continued to shape the village’s architectural identity. Franklin’s narrative typically includes family histories—such as the long‑standing Munday family—and the evolution of the village green as a social centre. Ref G 4.…
