Item description from seller

Second edition. [24], 199 pages. Hardcover: H 24.25cm x L 16cm. Lacks dust jacket. Muted red cloth rubbed with some soiling, slender strip of color fading along top of front board, color fading to spine cloth with mottling at head and heel bumped, spine's gilt stamped lettering remains fairly bright. Past owner's ink signature upon top edge along with boldly written ownership inscription on front pastedown; two negligibly small stains to fore-edge. Interior leaves are otherwise clean. Binding retains some crispness. A very good copy. Features an extended section of unpaged b/w plates among preliminary leaves, an Introduction by editor Bell Irvin Wiley, and an Index. A SOUTHERN WOMAN'S STORY was first published in 1879 by G.W. Carleton & Co. (New York) and S. Low, Son & Co. (London). To differentiate this second edition from exceptionally scarce first edition, historian and editor Bell Irvin Wiley amended the book's title, divided the narrative into separately titled chapters, included an index and thus allowing for the deletion of the original four-page table of contents, provided names where Pember had only supplied initials, and added six minor corrections to the text from notes in Pember's personal copy. Furthermore. the plate section was added as was a section of "Letters from Wartime Richmond" from Chimborazo Hospital patients.
