"SOLDIERS HOME, MEMPHIS, TENN" a/k/a Hunt-Phelan House. An extremely rare steel engraving from "THE WESTERN SANITARY COMMISSION; A SKETCH, ST. LOUIS, 1864. Published by R. P. Studley & Co. for The Mississippi Valley Sanitary Fair. This was the home of Confederate Colonel William Richardson Hunt, a close friend and confident of President Jefferson Davis and many other Confederate Military and political leaders who often stayed there. Generals Sherman and Grant both stayed there and later it was used as a hospital and Soldiers' home. Grant planned the Battle of Vicksburg from this house, which still exists in Memphis, Tennessee. Several years ago sadly its original contents were auctioned off by descendants of Colonel Hunt. Seller Inventory # ABE-316207114
