'The Soldier' of the poem becomes an almost mythological figure; he is the soldier of all time, of every time and place, an historical figure, and Mr. Aiken is concerned with his world-wide and age-old significance. This he explores, by reference and allusion, in the most lucid and harmonious lyrical verse. ***'Conrad Aiken has a reputation in the United States as one of their most promising and excellent poets, and it is time he had a reputation as great here. Most of his poetry has big themes - he has written little occasional verse - and he was, as early as Eliot, exploiting the same ground in his own way and with equal effectiveness. ***The Soldier is an important poem; thoughtful; musical; and beautifully constructed.' (Blurb from inside front jacket flap).***A scarce, slim and fragile Poetry London post-war book, complete in its original dustwrapper.***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
