Robert Buckner [1906-1989] was born in Virginia and educated at the University of Virginia and University of Edinburgh. He worked as a journalist, as well as in advertising and book publishing. He contributed to THE NEW YORKER, SATURDAY REVIEW, COSMOPOLITAN, ESQUIRE, HARPER'S BAZAAR, COLLIER'S and othr popular magazines. In 1936 he began writing and producing in Hollywood for Columbia, Warner Brothers, Universal Studios, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and 20th Century Fox. The idea for SIGRID AND THE SERGEANT evolved through a period of several years spent in Europe observing the U.S. Army in Germany. This humorous novel appears to be Bruckner's first novel.
